What’s this?

This is a blog about the use of pre-modern Scandinavian languages in modern culture. That is, instead of talking about why Vikings in films keep having horned helmets, I might talk about why they’re so often called Olaf or why Old Norse is represented by a mix of modern Danish and Swedish. Mainly it’s for fun, but you might also learn something. In general, the examples come from whatever I’m reading, watching or playing at the time, or things I find in my notes.

I have a PhD in Scandinavian Languages and I do research on Viking Age runes and medieval Scandinavian manuscripts. Runes will make many appearances here. I can be betweeted as @SkrivaFel.
